An early Day Motion calling
for a new inquest into the suspicious death of British student
Jeremiah
Duggan has been
tabled in Parliament.
The motion, tabled by Labour MP
for Liverpool Riverside Louise Ellman, states that further
investigation is “urgently required”.
It urges the
Attorney General to liaise with German authorities “to
establish the truth” and notes that forensic evidence
published in March by Jeremiah’s parents “casts doubt on the
current version of events”.
It also notes that a
British inquest rejected the German finding of suicide and
“calls on the government to ensure that, with the assistance
of mutual aid treaties, a full investigation into
Duggan’s death is
carried out”.
The motion had 11 signatories as the
JC went to press, including those of Jewish MPs Lee
Scott (Conservative, Ilford North) and Harry Cohen (Labour,
Leyton and Wanstead), and Hendon and Finchley and Golders
Green Labour MPs Andrew Dismore and Rudi
Vis.
Twenty-two-year-old Jeremiah was found dead on a
motorway in Wiesbaden in 2003, having earlier attended a
meeting of the Schiller Institute, believing it to be holding
an anti-war conference.
In fact, it is part of a global
network headed by convicted fraudster Lyndon LaRouche, who
espouses anti-British and antisemitic conspiracy theories.
Jeremiah had disclosed that he was Jewish at the Schiller
Institute meeting.
Jeremiah’s mother, Erica
Duggan, said: “I
hope all rabbis will ask their congregations to support us —
we do know this organisation incites hatred of
Jews.
“The most important reason why this motion should
be signed is because we are fighting for justice. This could
happen to any Briton who is in Germany — being found on the
side of the road and having their death brushed under the
carpet by saying it is suicide.”
The
Duggans have a
memorial fund to meet the cost of their battle.
Mrs
Duggan, who has just
received a 1,500 euro (£1,025) bill for the cost of
translating a pathology report, said: “I have no
representational or petition rights in Germany and I have to
have everything translated through court-certified
translators.”
